You have found a kitten or a cat?
We are not a shelter!
ThassosCats does not have a rescue centre or an animal shelter. There is no animal shelter anywhere on Thassos. The people who are committed helping the cats on Thassos work exclusively with private volunteers, whose capacity is limited. It will therefore be difficult to find help.
Have you found a kitten and still want to help it?
Please make sure you follow these steps:
Keep an eye on the kitten for a few hours. The mother cat leaves her kittens when she goes in search of food and then returns to feed them. If the kitten is healthy, there is every reason to believe it can manage on its own. Please leave it where it is.
You can help by buying a parasite treatment from the vet and administering it to the kitten.
If you find a kitten that is clearly abandoned and suffering from hypothermia, please do not feed it!
If its body temperature falls below 34.4 °C, its digestive system will cease to function.
If you feed the kitten, the following will happen:
- Fermentation in the stomach: The milk cannot be digested. It remains in the stomach, begins to ferment and painfully distends the stomach.
- Fatal circulatory collapse: The onset of fermentation and the inability to absorb nutrients lead to the kitten’s death within a very short time.
- Risk of choking: Cold kittens often no longer have a swallowing reflex. The milk can enter the lungs (aspiration), leading to choking or fatal pneumonia.
Please proceed as follows:
- Warm the kitten up first; NEVER feed it straight away: bring the kitten slowly up to normal body temperature. This can take between 1 and 3 hours.
- Use your body heat: Place the kitten under your clothes, directly against your skin. This is the safest way to prevent overheating. Alternatively, place a warm water bottle or a cherry-stone pillow (not too hot!) in a box and cover it with a towel. The kitten must not come into direct contact with the heat source.
- Feeding test: Only once the kitten has warmed up completely, feels warm (including its paws and ears) and is crying loudly or actively searching for a teat, you should carefully offer it special kitten milk (never cow’s milk!)
If the kitten remains weak or refuses food, please contact a vet immediately.
When is help actually needed?
- If the cat is injured
- If the cat is very weak or ill
- If the cat is in immediate danger
Even if it’s difficult, if these criteria don’t apply, leave the cat where it is.
A request
We are a very small charity with very limited resources. We do not have a rescue centre or an animal shelter. Please understand that we cannot take in every abandoned kitten. Thousands of kittens die on Thassos every year; we do what we can, but it is simply impossible for us to look after them all!
If you would like to help, please help us to help and contact the local authorities.
